affirmative action

Affirmative action means taking positive steps to end discrimination, to prevent its recurrence, and to create new opportunities that were previously denied to qualify women and people of color. Affirmative action can mean many different things to many different people. That's why there are so many disputes over affirmative action and when it can and can't be used. The Supreme Court has consistently made clear that gender or race can be taken into account in programs to expand opportunities for women and people of color. There are lawful affirmative action plans and there are unlawful affirmative action plans. These are determined to be lawful and unlawful by the court of law. .
I don't feel that affirmative action is necessary to accommodate racial and gender prejudice because I don't feel that its deeply entrenched in American society. We have grown as a country since affirmative action had to really be enforced and racism of all kinds was lurking everywhere. In the article, "Diversity: Making Good Business Sense" Elsie Cross says "The demographics have changed, and will continue to change. If an organization wants to prosper, it has to hire the best and brightest people it can. And so it will increasingly have to develop people on the basis of merit, rather than the basis of skin color and gender." This shows that affirmative action is starting to slow down in this day and age.
I also feel that affirmative action is no longer needed. Significant progress has been made and it is now time to return to hiring and firing without regard to race, gender, age, or ethnic background. This can also make or break a business. Say if you need an integral person to run a certain aspect of your business, and you need to meet quota for your affirmative action and the person you are forced to hire is less qualified, then your work will suffer. This can be the case in many instances. It is also said that you help companies create and implement policies to fight the systematic exclusion of good people.
