Symbolism in No Sugar

You can put me in gaol if you want to," indicating she"d rather go with Sam & Milly on the road than on the train which is more convenient, reflecting the closeness of the family and the idea of "going through the tough periods together." This is significant in the context of this drama, in that Aboriginal relations are based on kinship. The strong relationships within the Aboriginals is due to the respect they have for each other, even though they may fight and quarrel occasionally but essentially they hold each other in high regard. This connotation of the symbol helps illustrate the meaning in that it shows how the unity of family is still strong within the Aboriginals even though injustice is being committed by the whites. The white society has starved them of some of the basic rights that we today consider to be naturally assumed, such as the freedom to choose to live wherever we want and have access to decent medical assistance and education. This symbol as a result, signifies the strength of the Aboriginal family structure and gives an impression that it is able to withstand any problems imposed on it.
In conjunction, the symbol of blood also represents the Aboriginal struggle against oppression by the white society. The Aboriginals, ever since the colonization of Australia, have been "fighting" a battle against the whites to be free once more, and this drama furthers it onto the stage. The Aboriginals are alienated and sent to quarantine camps and has a likening to the Jews being sent to concentration camps during the period of the Holocaust. We see this struggle particularly in Act IV Scene III, when the pregnant Mary is confronted by Neal in his office. Neal asserts his power over the helpless pregnant Mary who refuses to work in the hospital. "You"ll work where I see fit, digging graves if I say so," Neal commands. She continues to challenge his words and as a result she is beaten by Neal with the cat-o"-nine -tails.
