While it was clear that Aurora was concerned she acted as a mother would and tried to make it seem like it was from stress and nothing to worry about. She remained calm and positive for her daughters sake. When Emma told her mother that she was diagnosed with cancer she immediately broke down she was worried about her daughter. She offered to watch the kids so that she could go to New York with Patsy for a weekend so that Emma could clear her mind. .
             Finally Emma is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Aurora spends all of her time in the hospital with Emma waiting on her every need. At one point Emma is in pain and Aurora frantically runs around the nurses desk begging to give her daughter more medicine for the pain. When Emma says goodbye to her children and she is speaking to Tommy it is as if she knows how he feels because that's how she felt about her mother. But now as she is older she realizes how much her mother loves her. She is strong in what she says to her boys. She makes sure they know that she loves them. .
             When Emma finally passes Aurora has a difficult time dealing with it. She speaks of how she though it would have been a relief but it was not, it was hard to watch her daughter die. It is extremely hard to deal with the death of a child. It interrupts the natural order of things and no parent should ever have to deal with that.
             "John Q".
             John Q is a devoted and strong powerful man was is placed in a desperate and helpless situation. He is a poor man fighting for the most valuable thing in his life, his son. During the beginning of the movie it is clear that the Quincy family is having money troubles but their son Michael seems to be happy and healthy and not really affected by his parents situation. The family attends church, both parents work, and the only thing that John Q worries about in terms of his child is that he acts like a child he tries hard to make him smile, for example when they imitate the wrestlers, and rushes from church to make sure his son will play ball.
