Edmund Burke once said, "The only necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." This Quote says good men are not good men if they don't speak out against evil to bring to an end to it. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee book proves how true the passage is. .
In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus is symbolic of reformation in the small town of Maycomb. He is trying to change the thoughts of the town's people by being the one to stand up and fight for Tom Robinson in a courtroom. This is symbolized by him shooting a crazy dog that was dangerous and the crazy dog was the racism infected the people who were also dangerous around African Americans so Atticus took a shoot at the racism. During the trial when one of the Cunninghams is undecided about the right and the wrong while being a jury symbolizes the beginning of equal rights for African Americans because a few weeks earlier he went to the jail with the intension of killing Tom Robinson. .
Mrs. Merriweather said something ironic about life she said the " out there in J. Gimes Everett's land there's nothing but sin and squalor." When she herself is a semi-racist person who lives in a small town with tons of "sin and squalor" happing right in front of her with out her realizing it. It's also ironic that he is exceptionally nice and respectful to Mrs. Dubose when she was horrid to him and his children. He acted this way because he knew how hard she has had it with her morphine problem. When jem was feeling ill at the trial and Mr. Raymond offers him a drink that was in a paper bag making it look like liquor when it just coca cola is a ironic because the to are complete opposites. He does this so people will think he has a drinking problem to explain why he is married to an African American lady. When Dill in the novel told Jem and Scout about hot steams and how if you felt one you were instantly dead. Scout and Jem were walking over a warm spot when bob Ewell attacked them and almost killed them Halloween night.
