the dalai lama

Some of the values that I hold dear to me are my rights as a human being. One of the few people in this world who greatly incorporates and has acted on this belief is the Dalai Lama. In every aspect, he represents a true leader, one who has translated a vision into a reality. A true leader has the courage to make tough decisions, the confidence to stand alone, and most importantly, the compassion to listen to the needs of others. The Dalai Lama may not have set out to be a leader, but because of the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent, he has become one of the greatest leaders in history. .
Dalai Lama means "Ocean of Wisdom" in Tibetan. Becoming a spiritual and political leader at the young age of 15, the Dalai Lama had to assume many responsibilities and make important decisions. When the Chinese military took over Tibet in 1959, the Dalai Lama was forced into exile in India. However, during his years in exile he has made crucial negotiations with the United Nations and China, creating a democratic form of government in Tibet. He set up educational, cultural and religious institutions that have made major contributions towards the preservation of the Tibetan identity and its rich heritage. .
Also, a truly compassionate individual, the Dalai Lama is an advocate for non-violence and human rights. He has become a symbol for universal responsibility, building a better understanding between people of different cultures, faiths, and ethnicities. In meetings with other spiritual and political leaders of the world, he has focused on global unity and an end to human suffering. His reputation as a scholar and as a man of peace earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. .
I believe a leader is a representation of courage, confidence, and compassion. The Dalai Lama possesses all these attributes, and as a powerful force in the world today, he serves by leading others. .
