They have questions of not knowing what else the perpetrator might do to them. The victims have to put up with the abuse and worry about who is going to listen, or support them through this difficult ordeal.              The victim often uses negative behaviors to get attention. Rape and incest victims often go through periods of needing to have sexual control over themselves by acting out in behaviors such as prostitution and promiscuous behavior. The victims want to do the things that have been done to them. They want the power and control that they did not get while they were being raped and sexually violated. .
An example is a person who I know, whom has been molested by her step-dad. She started having boyfriends at early age and she is very sexually experienced. She wants to go to female strip clubs to see the girls strip so she would use the moves on her boyfriend. She is often distant in sharing her feelings as a way of protecting herself from others because of the abuse. .
Substance abuse happens when a person uses substances as a way to cope with the incident and often the substances take over their life. According to Karyl, many people will start using substances because they experience some of anxiety and depression. The victim often experiences trauma, or such sexual type of violence in their life. They start using substance as a way of coping with it while frequently continuing to be victims of the violent cycle. They use substances as a way to self-medicate themselves from the anxiety, depression and fear. In special circumstances they begin to create more problems because they are intoxicated. They can sadly make poor judgments, such as going out to bar at night, picking up by a few guys, and possibly becoming a victim once again.
