             Canada has never truly been a military community, is this a good idea? The view that Canada should have a large military force is a common but unpractical view. On one side of the argument, is that a strong military is a good idea to security. However Canada simply does not have the budget to keep such a large force.
             Canadians have faced many close calls, in the postwar period, as Soviet-American hostility developed into a cold war; Canada found itself between 2 superpowers. Canadian defense faced a new paradox, where the US borders were a possible threat however, Soviet Union was the ultimate enemy. If a war had resulted from this conflict Canada would have been the first to go. .
             However Canadians have paid no price for unpreparedness. Fortifications built at Canadian expense serve crowds of tourists as monuments to the bad ideas of the Canadian military. The funding that the Capital might have lavished on defense with is now available to finance the social programs of the 21st century. .
             Many Canadians believe themselves to be far way from danger. Most are satisfied to condemn the evils of land mines, nuclear proliferation, and children being used as soldiers. They are the first to complain, however, if their innocent assumptions leave them defenseless, and those who try to defend them will be the first to bear the blame. .
             While Canadian Forces planned and trained for the alliance warfare that had shaped their experience throughout the 20th century, the government saw no reason to pay for the sophisticated and increasingly costly equipment such a role required. Instead, the Canadian Forces were justified to taxpayers and the Treasury Board by such popular but unmilitary roles as search and rescue, disaster assistance, fishery patrols and border guard against drug smugglers. .
             Is the world dangerous enough to worry about? Strategic analysts found plenty to worry them. In the new millennium, threats were not limited to terrorists or the decay of state power and authority in the lands of the former Soviet Union.
