             The video were watched in class portrayed the typical Middle Eastern family. Many themes lay within the film, such as, the struggle between man and woman, the struggle of man and himself, and the yearning to grow up. The first, the struggle between man and woman was shown throughout the movie with the mother and father. The movie showed how, although the father sometimes got mad and threw things at his wife, in the end he loved her. It's a constant battle between the two of them. The second theme, the struggle of man with himself is shown in many of the characters. For one, there was a battle going on within the father; he was fighting to keep his family together. It was hard for him, however, because everyone was growing up and they couldn't remain on the farm forever. Another struggle was with the oldest daughter; she wanted badly to get married but the man she had fallen in love with could not ask her father. All of the children couldn't wait to grow up. Each of them hoped that one day, very soon, they would also get to leave home like their older brother had done. They were tired of working tirelessly on the farm for virtually nothing. This movie reminded me of my family in a way. Although my family doesn't live on a farm, we have the same problems that the family in the movie does. My father acts just like the man in the movie; I guess one can say he's the typical Arab father: loving yet short-tempered. I liked the movie due to the fact that it's packed with several themes and messages that it tries to send to its readers.
