" A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

aAll students have had hundreds of teachers in their lifetimes. A very few of these teachers they remember as being exceptionally good. What are the qualities that combine to create an excellent, memorable teacher? Why do some teachers inspire students to work three times harder than they normally would, while others inspire students to skip class? Why do students learn more from some teachers than others? Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs. It demands a broad knowledge of subject matter, a caring attitude, a love of teaching, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of students. What teachers do in class affects students" attitudes toward the class. Teachers can inspire their students when they sincerely believe in students" capability to accomplish great things, when they are concerned about students, and when they are inventive and creative during the learning process. .
Teachers encourage students to study by being optimistic about their abilities. They set high expectations for all students. Teachers expect that all students can and will achieve in the classroom. Great teachers are able to find the good in each person, uncover talents in every student, and fuel the fire of greatness that exists in us all. For example, Jack Martens, a great music teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in San Francisco, has created one of the most vital music programs in the nation. He works with children who come from low-income families and who may speak English as second language. Some parents of these children have problems such as a drag-and alcohol-addiction. Many of these children are on the outskirts academically. Mr. Martens teaches them how to use musical instruments and how to play. For the first time in their lives children have found something to excel at. He has set great expectations for these children.
