death penalty

Juveniles and the death penalty has also been an issue. Five states place the minimum death penalty age at 17 while seventeen states, including California, plus the federal government has an age minimum of at least 18 for capital punishment. Additional death penalty issues include religion and public support. Support for the death penalty keeps changing. In 1966 the support reached its all time low of 42%. During the 70s and 80s the amount of Americans in favor of the death penalty has increased to an 80% in 1994. The support declined again in 1994 and today 66% of Americans support the death penalty (Criminal Justice Statistics). The main concern today is the death penalty and innocence. Since 1973, over 100 people have been released from death row with evidence of innocence (Staff Report, House Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights, Oct. 1993). Innocent prisoners have spent about 8 years in jail before their release.
The latest reports show that the Northeast has the fewest executions at 4.1% and the South has the far most at 6.8%. The Midwest is at 5.1% and the West is second to highest at 5.7%. The total number of executions since 1976 has been a total of 879. It shows that 502 defendants that were executed were white, 299 Black, 57 Hispanic, and 21 other. (FBI Crime Statistics for 2002).
Personally, I do not believe in the death penalty. I think that as long as death penalty is an option, there is the possibility that innocent people will be wrongfully accused. Today we have many more techniques such as DNA testing, but there are still chances that innocent lives will be taken. An example of this was when Greg Wilhoit spent six years on death row for a crime that he didn't commit. The wrongful execution of a person is something that can never be repaired.
Unfortunately many people support capital punishment today. I think that much of this support comes from the belief that death penalty is legitimate and that murderers should suffer by having their lives taken since they have taken the life of someone else.
