Culture and Conflict

'"Make an exception for me, God. Remember that I'm an American. We're not used to losing our children."' (Dettwyler 1994) .
Dettwyler displayed an important fact we sometimes forget as a member of a certain society we sometimes feel that we are more important than other cultures that are perhaps less privileged than we. Every culture displays different values through their media, which tells us what is appropriate and what is not. Our media, however, does little to show us what are important values to other cultures that may lead to the common misconception that, what is important to us must be important to everyone else. Where in our society the television show "Bay Watch" has been popular, many other countries find it very distasteful and even revolting because of the amount of visible skin. This could be the cause of hostility because where Americans are used to the amount of visible skin displayed everywhere, other nations encourage, even force their women to cover up, thus making the U.S seem evil to some cultures. Some cultures, however, learn to adapt to what other cultures approve of, for which I have an example. According to Denton (2002) The east Semai are such a passive culture that they have decided to wear more clothes to cover their genitals and breasts because of their increasing interaction with non-Semai people. Other cultures are not as passive, and perhaps not as willing to change themselves, or their views of other cultures either for matters of pride or a lack of interest in what others believe. As an American we believe that equality is a right of the people. In the United States we believe that if we are treated unfairly, or without equality, then we are being cheated out of a natural right. When we interviewed many Iraqi women we found that there were few rights that they were allowed, and we (American women) found that fact appalling, but the women of Iraq were fairly comfortable with their lives and amount of rights they possessed, because to them it was normal.
