You are to speak in a debate at your school, on the motion "In the world economy. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer". Write your speech, either agreeing pr disagreeing with this motion.
Good morning, principals, teachers and fellow schoolmates. Today, our debate motion is "in the world economy, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer". Our group strongly agrees with this.
In today's world, the gap between the richest ten percent and the poorest ten percent of the world population has been widening. This widening increases in a rapid rate. The rich can waste tones of food a day; on the other hand, the poor may die because of lack of nutrients or clean water. Perhaps you disagree with us because the world economy is growing and the living standard is improving. But this is just a statistic which shows the average of it. The rich get much better off than the poor, at the time, poor becoming much poorer. The world is improving but not as a whole.
Firstly, the world price is increasing at tremendous speed. To the rich, this increase in price for whatever goods cost only a tiny bit more to the rich. It's just like losing one or two spoon of water out of a reservoir. On the opposite side, such an increase could cost ten days of twenty-four-hours work to the poor. In this non-stop-growing world, the cost of staying alive with sufficient goods is increasing. With extremely low wages, poor stay poor and even poorer.
Secondly, the rich own most of the resources, they trade and gain profit through selling and buying. Because of the incentive to profit maximization, rich tends to gain as much as they can. They price all goods and services with unreasonable price to the poor, which including increase in charge on basic necessities such as food. In addition, they buy primary products from the poor at an extreme low price. For example, coffee beans. Those bean costs just ten to twenty cents a log, which is hardly enough for poor to survive.
