Why Performing Sait?

Each piece created a shrine that is a sacred and divine place" (Hawley, 1993, p.14). This myth of Sati and Shiva remarkably ponders two aspects of this particular custom: Sati's sacred character as being loyal to her husband and attachment of Sati's life to her divine husband Shiva. Therefore, Indian women who burnt themselves after their husband's death gain divinity both in sense of reconnecting the body of goddess Sati and sacrificing their lives for loyalty. With these examples we can conclude that all women who commit Sati have a common characteristic of being "heroic", because they are the sufferers of cruelty and aggression, and they over come these violence by practicing Sati, meaning that by proving their "faithfulness" or "their moral fortitude generally". (Hardy, 1994. p.151).
Along with the mythical background, the meaning of Sati as "goddess" can also be attributed to language. Sati's meanings had differed according to the regional cultures and the social stratification stemmed out of the caste system in India. First of all, in regard to the common myth, there was a wide usage of the word Sati as the name of an earlier incarnation of the goddess Parvati. Folk traditions of elite castes explained Sati as "virtuous women who ontologically bounded to her husband" (Hawley, 1993. p.12 ). Such women had to comply with what their husbands wanted them to do. This could be explained as a strong devotion. At that point, the meaning of Sati was taken as a concept of being loyal to men. Also in Hindu languages such as Indian Marathi languages, Sati is understood as an individual, rather than a practice because of the influence of the goddess Sati whereas in Sankrist language, Sati means feminine participle of the verb "to be". In other words, being a woman has the same meaning as practicing Sati (Bal & Boer, 1994. p. 256). .
In order to point out how Indian women were oppressed and disregarded in society, one needs to expand his/her analysis of Sati custom beyond myths and linguistic approaches.
