Thus, Smith is "forced" to capitulate by the secret police. Many others also have no choice but to obey the ways and rules of society, for if they refuse, the totalitarians use "a methodology of terror which enables them to break human beings by getting inside them" (Hall 340). Thus, the characters of the novel capitulate either by choice, physical violence, or mental breakdown.
Nineteen Eighty-Four has different groups comprised of unique characters. These characters can be related to groups or people in modern day society. The main character, Winston Smith, is a party functionary who rebels against the Party and Big Brother. He can be seen as an anarchist that goes against the ways of his or her government. Julia is a rebellious, beautiful, dark-haired girl working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth, who has a sexual affair with Winston, among other things that sin against the party. She can also been seen as an anarchist but too a lesser extent than Winston since "her rebellion against the Party is small and personal, for her own enjoyment, in contrast to Winston's ideological motivation" (Sparknotes 1). O"Brien is a member of the inner party, yet he is not in aim with all sympathy's of the party (Magill 4225). O"Brien tricks Winston into believing that he is part of the brotherhood but in reality he's not. O"Brien can be seen as a spy inside an opposing government. Though he never appears in the novel, and though he may not actually exist, Big Brother, the perceived ruler of Oceania, is an extremely important figure because he haunts Winston's life and fills him with hatred and fascination (Sparknotes 1). Big Brother reminds us of an intimidating ruler of a government, or dominating country. Emmanuel Goldstein, a mythical Jewish male, is head of a conspiracy in which the Party would be overthrown. He as well as Big Brother never actually appears in the novel.
