Many believe that this war will result in a massive number of casualties for both American soldiers and Iraqi citizens and will alter American/Iraq relations in a way that may be irreversible. There are other options of achieving similar goals that President Bush has, which do not include such drastic actions of War. Some believe that unless President Bush gives the public a clear and compelling reason for war, that we should not even contemplate getting into a unilateral war against Iraq.
Many believe that the United States should wait and allow time for weapons inspectors to go into Iraq before declaring war. A war against Iraq is illegal under international law. Articles forty one and forty two of the United Nations Charter state that no member state has the right to use military action to enforce any resolution except when the UN Security Council decides that a resolution has been breached, determines that all non-military means of enforcement have been exhausted, and then specifically authorizes the use of military force (United Nations Charter). The UN has certainly not authorized the U.S. to take military action against Iraq. In addition, U.S. allies in the region overwhelming oppose an U.S. invasion of Iraq. An American attack on Iraq would likely only further turn many Middle-Eastern nations against the United States. Furthermore, there is no evidence, available to the public, that links Iraq to Al Qaeda or other terrorist organizations, neither is Iraq a military threat to neighboring countries. Also there is no undeniable evidence that Iraq is developing weapons of mass destruction. U.S. officials have admitted that there is no evidence that Iraq has resumed its nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons programs (Washington Post). Resumption of UN weapons inspections holds the greatest promise of keeping Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction. However, President Bush has outright dismissed Iraq's agreement to allow the return of weapons inspectors, raising questions about whether it is really weapons inspections is actually issue, or merely a false reason for going to war with Iraq.
