I, as I am sure you do Dean Brady, believe very strongly that diversity is important on college campuses. My question is we really being diverse when we are improving the odds for one group of people, but not for them all? I happen to agree with Professor Margaret Montoya of University of New Mexico law school "only a limited use of race conscious criteria will result in a racially diverse student body in colleges and universities.".
Numerous people would also agree that the points system for admission is corely unconstitutional. The constitution was put in place to protect all people: Asian, Cocacion, African America, man, women, child, Hispanic, Native American, the list could go on and on. All people are created equal. If a person is a U.S. citizen then that person has all the same rights as his neighbor. Now, we all don't start out in the same type of living conditions or with the same families, but we all have the chance when we become adults to do what ever we want. We all have the chance to make something of our selves. America is based on the principle that if you work hard enough you can achieve your goals and "become somebody." The points system takes all these natural born rights away. President Bush took the words out of my mouth when he said, "Quota systems that use race to include or exclude people from higher education. And the opportunities it offers are devise, unfair, and impossible to square with the constitution.".
Those apposing this view would argue that the points system is justly constitutional set in place to protect the multi-ethnic, multi-colored student body for the university and student body as a whole.
