Personalities of Federation

He addressed a group on 24th October, 1889, with his famous Tenterfield speech, calling for a great national government for all Australians' and calling for K a convention of leading men from all the colonies, delegates appointed by the authority of Parliament, who would fully represent the opinions of different Parliaments of the colonies'.
Parkes pursued his dream of federation with enthusiasm, and his efforts resulted in the inter-colonial conference in Melbourne in 1890 and he also presided over the first Federal convention held in Sydney in 1891. He drafted resolutions for debate and these provided the basis for the next ten years of discussion and negotiation between the colonies. Due to his ill health, he was forced to retire from the proceedings, and was taken over by other well-known figures such as Sir Samuel Griffith and Edmund Barton.
Sir Henry had also been a writer (with the autobiography Fifty Years in the Making of Australian History) and poet, and had been knighted. Unfortunately, Parkes died before his dream of Federation was realised, but his dedication to a stronger, unified Australia lived on. He has been known by a range of names, the most widely-used Father of Federation, and Grand Old Man (of politics) and The Man of the Hour. His success in politics and silver tongue contradict the images of his many business failures and humiliation at the hand of financiers.
His name was given to a town in New South Wales (Parkes) and two statues were erected in his honour. Also, the Parkes Foundation, a foundation for the study of Australian political history, was created. He appears on stamps and replaced the Queen on the five dollar note in 2000.
