However, the characters usually chose self-interest over the welfare of others in most situations. Self-interest only aggravates the situation. The search for control over the natural order is a contributing factor to the entire novel. The scientists cannot change the natural order even through engineering. They attempt to make all the dinosaurs in the park female. Through changing a genetic code, the scientists attempt to use frog DNA to link the dinosaur DNA, but what they do not know is that the frogs can change sexes if needed. In the frog's environment, they can adapt and change sexes if needed to keep the species alive and evolving. Most of the scientists" difficulties arise from their dearth of knowledge. The scientists engineered dinosaurs rather than an already living species. Because this animal has been extinct for so long, they cannot acquire enough information to be able to successfully and safely work with these animals. .
In The Lost World, conflict is happening constantly. Biosyn, the antagonist, is trying to eliminate the scientists so they can make a profit off the dinosaurs. The Biosyn team stalks Malcolm and Levine constantly. Lewis Dodgson, the leader of Biosyn will stop at nothing; he is determined to get the dinosaurs and the technology this time. The scientists only wish to learn from the dinosaurs. They try not to disturb the environment, but merely study it and learn as much as possible. The Biosyn team on the other hand, travels in their polluting, gas-powered jeeps and steal as many eggs as possible. Stealing these eggs sends the protective dinosaurs into a frantic search of their eggs, destroying everything in their path (Trembley 160). .
For every action there is a consequence, whether it is good or bad. In this case, one mishap or lack of judgement tends to lead to another. Ian Malcolm's constant lecturing on the chaos theory reinforces this structure.
