If he saw a young man and woman walking down the street holding hands or two people kissing, it would be understandable if the girl came up in his mind. However, he chooses to point out these people because they have nothing to do with the girl constantly on his mind yet for some reason she stays there. She stays on his mind because the isolation he puts himself in causes her to dig a deeper and deeper hole in his heart decreasing the chance he will ever have to actually talk to her. This eventually shapes his views on finding a person to be romantic with. The more and more he thinks about her, the more and more he becomes isolated with increasing longing for comfort he thinks can be found in this girl. This shows that no matter what the situation, his infatuation is bigger than he realizes. These hectic events taking place around him could be very distracting individually and to put them all together would cause an incredible distraction he describes as a "single sensation" of life to which his first thought was her name. Furthermore, in prayer, he still thought about her and explained that "his body was like a harp and her word and gestures were like fingers running upon the wires" (62, Araby). Such a creative and romantic statement tells us that he is a romantic person with inspirations he wishes to share with his companion. Already from just his explanation of one character, we have determined that he is very creative yet does not express it to her because of his shyness. This shyness has been molded directly from his longing for this girl as well as religion and his aunt and uncle. .
His aunt and uncle play a role in our understanding of him and how he adapts to his surroundings. We can see through his encounters with his aunt and uncle that they are not too strict on him. When the character wanted to go to the bazaar to meet his companion, his uncle had to return home and give him some money.
