2 The issue was perceived in accordance to the American political culture. Our nation has a strong belief in equality. The definition of equality at times is questionable, as affirmative action will avow. However, America believes in equality of opportunity and this belief helped to shape the course of policies regarding Affirmative Action. America=s policy concerning Affirmative Action always centered around the belief of the American=s fundamental belief of equality.

             The policy of Affirmative Action has many champions and a lot of opposition, making the issue .
             very controversial. Those who oppose Affirmative Action and support Propositions such as California=s .
             Proposition 209 argue that they want a "color-blind" society in which emphasis is shifted from racial .
             differences to the recognition of all Americans as equal in all respects. Affirmative-action opponents base their arguments on at least one of four main points. Many believe that preferences are inherently unfair citing differential requirements. Some also believe that affirmative action has further divided U.S. society by grouping people together instead of recognizing individuals undoing the works of the Civil Rights Movement. There are several that feel affirmative action has worked in providing increased opportunities for minorities and women, but that it has run its course and should be eliminated. Lastly, there are those that think affirmative action casts doubts on the quality of its beneficiaries. Even some minorities oppose the implementation of Affirmative Action and support the abolishment of race-based affirmative-action policies. They consider those programs offensive because they demean the intelligence and abilities of minorities.
