It is only his sister Grete who remains devoted, as he is left alone in his room. .
From here, Gregor's life changes rapidly. Since he no longer holds his place in the family, the certain joys that comprised him were absent. For example, he no longer found milk, his favorite beverage, pleasant. Gregor must adapt to his new life by eating only the fruits left by Grete they appeal to him. The assortment contained "old, half-rotten vegetables; bones from supper, coated with a white gravy that had solidified; a few raisins and almonds; a cheese that two days earlier Gregor would have found inedible; a dry slice of bread and butter"(K 26). Gregor would not even glance of this arrangement. It would appear through analyzing his new eating habits that the life of a workless father is "rotten". .
Aside from Gregor, the behaviors of the rest of the family are worth noting. The mother, despite her love for Gregor can no longer bear to look at him. Again, though it is due to his appearance, it could also serve as not wanting to see him without a job. It is through her pain that leads the father and sister to resent him. The father is a defeated business man who regains his lost confidence once he has to work again. However, he only decides to work since Gregor cannot. The sister, Grete, had been the only person to care for him. However, this would change. With her mother's ailments becoming worse as Gregor remains in the home, she decides it best to give up hope and wishes her brother to leave as he is no longer wanted. .
Not long after, Gregor dies in his room. The following day is warm and sunny. The family is moving to a new apartment, all three have acquired jobs, and the parents think it time for Grete to find a husband. Concluding, as Gregor could no longer provide for his family, he became isolated. He would die alone with not one person thankful for what he has done. The rest of the family, on the other hand, was performing quite well in his absence.
