Hawaii

             James Michener tells us of another god in his book, Hawaii. He wrote about the god Oro and a king and his brother. A high priest has come to the island of Bora Bora to collect human sacrifices to the new god, Oro. The king, Tomotoa, and his brother, Teroro, were blessed by the god Tane, but the high priest wanted them to convert to worship Oro. There were plots and plans of taking the kings brother as a sacrifice for political reasons and there were plans to kill the priest, but that does not really apply here. In Hawaii, the people adopted new gods that fit the appropriate situation, always looking for the best outcome (James Michener's Hawaii).
             Pele was the goddess of fire and lived in Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii. The Hawaiians worshipped volcanoes for fear and other general purposes. The Hawaiian people still feel the wrath of Pele to this day with eruptions and curses. Ranger stations reported hundreds of people returning rocks they took off of the volcano that have given them bad luck. Could that just be coincidence?              The other volcanoes worshipped by the Hawaiians were Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, where Pele lived (aloha-angel.com). Mauna Kea is an inactive volcano and was known as the "white mountain" due to its snow capped peaks in the winter. From its summit under the water to its peak, it is 32,000 ft., making it the highest mountain in the world (gohawaii.com). Mauna Loa is an active volcano whose lava covers over half of Hawaii Island and even covers parts of Kilauea. Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic crater. The current eruption cycle, the longest running in modern Hawaiian history, began on January 3, 1983. The volcano spews an average 525,000 cu yd of lava a day and by 1995 had added about 500 acres of new land to the island.
             To worship their gods, the Hawaiians constructed stone structures called heiaus.
