Dougherty (Goddess --). They were wed on June 19, 1942 (Leaming 13). Dougherty once described Norma Jeane as a "wonderful wife, good cook, immaculate housekeeper, and she enjoyed being married" (Goddess --).
             During World War II, Mr. Dougherty was involved in the war effort. Like most wives, Mrs. Dougherty worked in a war factory, assembling parachutes (). An army photographer took photos of her working and soon after, she captured the title of "Miss Flame-Thrower." In 1945, Blue Book Modeling Agency came to her with a modeling contract. James Dougherty told Norma Jeane that she needed to make a decision to be either Mrs. Dougherty or an actress. This provoked Norma Jeane Dougherty to file for divorce. She informed Mr. Dougherty that she had a new name, "Marilyn Monroe." This originated from her grandmother's middle name "Marilyn," and her mother's maiden name "Monroe" (Goddess --).
             In Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe became an instant legend. Many described her as " an alluring blend of sex and sensitivity" (Goddess --). She is now believed to be one of the most recognizable figures of the twentieth century. She was featured in twenty-nine films, not including her final, uncompleted film, Something's Got to Give (Spoto 866). Marilyn Monroe worked hard at her Hollywood stardom. She took acting and vocal lessons, and was shy and ill at ease when she was acting (Brown 63). Monroe was also involved with commercials, magazines, Broadway shows, and some of her songs were broadcast on radio stations.
             Marilyn Monroe married baseball great, Joe DiMaggio and famous play write, Arthur Miller. She was also engaged in many affairs with famous men including: Frank Sinatra, former President John F. Kennedy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Marlon Brando.
             In the early morning of August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe's housekeeper, Eunice Murray, found Ms. Monroe presumably dead at around 12:30 A.
