Women sometimes feel compelled to put up with unwanted male attention. Women have no control over what men say and do. There is nothing women can do to stop men form saying or doing what they want unless women stay away from men altogether. Men will often make comments or violate a woman's freedom regardless of weather the women are enjoying the attention or not. In the short story "A Woman On a Roof," a woman experiences some unwanted male attention while she is sunbathing on her rooftop. Despite her attempts to ward the men off by acting indifferent and seemingly aggravated, they still continue to bother her (735). The woman on the roof has little control over this situation, and thus must ignore the men and put up with their impulsive lack of maturity. .
The woman on the roof experiences the impulsive immaturity of three men working on an adjacent rooftop about "fifty yards away" (734). These men are a good example of how men act the way they want towards women regardless of how their immature behavior is affecting the woman. The three men in this story took the opportunity to sneak a peak of a woman laying practically half-naked on a rooftop in London, during a hot week in June (734). They whistled and shouted things at her to get her attention, but she ignored them and continued to tan. Surely this chauvinistic degrading, does not exhibit the characteristics of mature men. .
A mature man knows how to handle himself when a woman expresses to him that the attention she is getting form him is unwanted. The three men in this story obviously are not too mature in the way they handle themselves when the woman on the roof ignores them. The weather the next day was the same, and so again the woman goes out onto the rooftop to sunbath and enjoys the weather and a book. The men again whistled and shouted at her. The woman further angered the men as "She looked up at them, cool and remote, then went on reading" (735).
