Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

During 1607-1750 was during the Early American colonial times. This is when the New World started to form and begin. The Old World was starting to diminish slowly. The Puritan ideas, actions, and daily life revolved around the Bible. Because many Puritans believed that their soul was a constant battleground between the forces of good and evil, they watch over each other very closely to make sure that every action they do truly glorified God. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God by Jonathan Edwards, the language and themes reflect the Puritan ideas of Early America.
A poignant use of figurative language reveals that Edwards has established a good and evil, as well as a Heaven and Hell. For example, when Edwards" states that " it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that hold you up," he is illustrating that the barrier that keeps you from falling into Hell is God. In addition, Edwards also states that "Neither is God in the least bound by any promise to hold "em up one moment," the point of this phrase is that God is not obligated in any way to grant any individual salvation or his grace. .
The thematic emphasis of Edwards" sermon illustrates the explanation of why we are in the hands of an angry God. For example, when Edwards suggests that " His wrath towards you burns like fire," he is illustrating that God thinks our worthy of nothing, and "deserve the fiery pit." In addition, when Edwards also suggests that "you are then thousand times so abominable in his eyes as the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours," in this, he is also illustrating that God knows how much we sin and that we are as evil as the saint who is symbolized by a harmful serpent. Also he seems to believe that we take God's grace for granted and we feel that we should be glorified by his love and salvation even though we are sinners.
The Puritan ideas during the colonial times had a huge effect that is shown in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God by Jonathan Edwards.
