The short story, "The Sneering-, has an interesting plot structure. The setting is at a house in a teenager-filled, urban neighborhood. Even though everything seems alright, inside the "doll house- evil lurks. Jack, the husband, is one of the two characters of the story. He is married to Emily, and is an old scrooge. He cannot stand the loud teenagers, roadside construction and the racket of passengers. Emily, on the other hand seems unaffected by the traffic and pedestrian noise. She attempts to calm Jack down whenever he gets agitated with the clatter. Pretty soon though, Emily starts to lose her mind as well. One day Jack wakes to find his wife gone. He looks out the window and sees Emily walking toward the roadway. He bolts out the door pushes aside some ignorant men that were poking fun at his mindless wife. He reaches the roadway to find his wife standing still, waiting for the "vicious- man to run over her. Jack manages to tackle Emily and save her life. The man happened to swerve, hit a post, and die. After this Emily would never be the same. Everyday she would stare out the window, gazing mindlessly at the traffic. Jack then decided to take Emily for a walk. While on this journey, they happen to come across four teenage boys. These boys poke fun at Emily's bewilderment, and Jack begins to take up for her. Before Jack even knew what was happening Emily leapt at one of the boys. The boys took off and Emily and Jack went home. Emily became more reclusive, and Jack more paranoid. Emily seldom left the house, and Jack began to see invisible intruders in the house. Not long thereafter Emily wandered out to the road again. Jack stumbled after her and ran to the road. She was not there. He turned around and there she was, looking out the front-room curtains.
