To effectively manage the human resource, managers must work through an integrated human resource management system. This system consists of five functional areas, which are:.
Employee and Labor Relations.
Human Resource Planning, Recruitment, and Selection.
Human Resource Development.
Compensation and Benefits.
Safety and Health.
The functional area that this research paper deals with is in the area of Safety and Health.
Safety involves protecting employees from injuries caused by work related accidents. Health refers to freeing them from the danger of illness and working for their general physical and mental well being.
In 1970 federal legislation enacted the Occupational Safety and Health Act, better known as "OSHA-. The goal of this legislation was to assure a safe and healthful workplace for every American worker. This act redefined a manager's role in the workplace. He or she was now responsible for ensuring that safety and health regulations were adhered to in the work place. Failure to do this resulted in severe penalties levied against the organization by OSHA.
Although initially it may have been the fines that drove many organizations in their conformance to the safety regulations it wasn't long before it was discovered that there were other benefits for the employer in maintaining a safe and healthful work environment. Some of these benefits are:.
Profitability - employees can only produce while they are on the job. Also, injury results in payouts for medical costs, lost production, increased recruiting, and additional training requirements.
Employee and Public relations - a good safety record may well provide companies with a competitive edge.
Reduced Liability - an effective safety program can reduce corporate and executive liability for charges when employees are injured.
Marketing - a positive safety record can help firms win contracts.
Productivity - an effective safety program may boost moral and productivity while simultaneously reducing rising costs.
