Depression ranks as one of the most devastating and painful experiences for people. Fortunately depression can be treated effectively, however, it is the person's job to recognize the problem and seek proper treatment in order to improve their quality of life. .
             Internal Factors.
             In order to understand the whole concept of depression, it is very important to be introduced to one of the most important causes, which is the chemical imbalance in the brain. This imbalance can be caused my both internal and external factors. Extensive studies have shown that the most common cause of depression related symptoms originate with an unbalanced distribution of neurotransmitters in the brain (which are chemicals produced by the central nervous system), such as Serotonin and Norepenephrine (Roesch, Encyclopedia of Depression 138-139). These chemicals, along with other neurotransmitters are thought to be very important to cell-to-cell communication in the brain. They control a great set of tasks such as distribution of pain, learning, thoughts, memory, and the needs to eat, sleep and drink. A chemical imbalance of these neurotransmitters causes a disturbance within specific receptor sites in the brain, thus impairing a person's function as it would normally (Roesch, Encyclopedia of Depression 138- 139). An internal or external event can trigger this sort of imbalance such as having a baby, going through menopause, losing a job, or even a death in the family. A person can also experience symptoms of depression unpredictably and for no reason at all. .
             Medical conditions are also a major cause of depression. Having a medical condition may cause a person to feel helpless, useless, and inferior to others. These diseases include endocrinogical, neurological, and viral. Having a serious medical condition, can trigger negative feelings, in which can cause a person to be depressed.
