The age distribution of the deadhead ranges from ten to sixty-two with a mean age between twenty-three and thirty-two. (Adams 2000) This shows us that this is an older group of people, and that it is not just a bunch of kids looking for a good time. The gender break down is in favor of the males at about sixty-five percent to thirty-five percent. (Lehman 2000) Most of the people that are coming into the group come from middle to upper-middle class families. (Adams 2000) For traditional family life, most deadheads are single, eighty-five percent, about nine percent are married, about four percent are divorced, and one percent are separated. (Lehman 2000) .
There was a study that was conducted on deadheads during the spring tour of 1993 and there was a self-report on the annual income of deadheads before taxes. The distribution varies from zero dollars to sixty thousand dollars a year, with an average of about fifteen thousand dollars a year, and fifty percent of the people had incomes of about ten thousand dollars. (Lehman 2000) This information says that this population is below the average in America, but what this study does not include is the money that is earned in the underground' economy of the deadheads. Outside of the concerts there is vending that goes on. It is something that resembles a bazaar, people sell just about everything ranging from food, clothes, concert tickets, posters, art, rocks, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. People do this so that they can make money to pay for their concert tickets that night and to make sure they have enough gas money to get to the next show. So it is not so much that these deadheads are living in poverty, they just need enough to get by and to keep on going to Grateful Dead concerts. .
Education is no different than the other institutions in the way that there is a large distribution among deadheads. It ranges from an eighth grade education to post-graduate PhDs and MDs.
