Threat Of Nuclear War

The globe has been divided into a series of border skirmishes, any one of which places us on the brink of nuclear war. For example, India is building a wide variety of new missiles with a range of 90 miles to 1,300 miles. (2) And Iraq refuses to let United Nations teams in to inspect its nuclear weapons stores. (1) In addition, the many of the countries in the former Soviet Union have set up lines of trade, both legal and not, to support their own economies.              The Proliferation of Nuclear weapons by historic enemies such as India and Pakistan is creating a network of hot spots all over the globe. The dangers are increased by the frequency of territorial disputes in these areas. The war there is not a cold war. Rogue nations attaining nuclear weapons by outside help do not have the correct social or political atmosphere to properly contain the use of weapons of mass destruction. While there has been a worldwide outcry to halt the production of nuclear warheads, the U. N., and other organizations are not even aware of the whereabouts of many weapons and cannot stop proliferation.
While the smuggling of nuclear material is on the rise, our ability to track and stop smuggling has increased. A new Stanford database has been formed that lists illicitly obtained weapons-grade nuclear material as well as scientific or medical material that may have been lost, misplaced or thrown away. (5,7) Our ability to track material has aided the world in catching many smugglers. The amounts of material are usually small, less than a kilogram. (6) Many smugglers are caught every year. (5).
We do not know what is missing, where it might be heading, or the whereabouts of the material that we do have. (7) When the Soviet Union fell lots of nuclear material was left with out protection.
