Supermodels Of Yesterday And Today

The fashion industry is filled with people from both ends of the spectrum. That is why there isn't just one thing that makes a model successful. Everything from physical appearance to the image they represent are factors in success. For example, look at Gia and Cindy Crawford they are two of the biggest names in fashion but they are very different.
Gia Marie Carangi known simply as Gia took the fashion world by storm. She broke the Barbie doll image of beauty during her time with her dark features, incredible body, and bad girl image. Some of the reasons for this image were her attitude and the fact she was unpredictable. Once during a photo shoot she said she was stepping out for a cigarette and never returned. Everyone who knew Gia said "You never really knew who she was and if you think you did you never knew her at all." She was discovered at age seventeen in a disco. Gia was known for her unhealthy lifestyle and drug addiction but surprisingly her employers didn"t see this as a major problem. Her weight constantly fluctuated and employers often asked that makeup be used to cover "that thing on her hand" which were track marks from heroin use. Agency's tried to ignore the fact she had a problem. She was once found by her drug counselor at a run down building in lingerie from a photo shoot she had just left surrounded by junkies using communal needles. Also Gia's personal life was viewed as being far from glamorous. Gia was a lesbian in a time when there was and intense homophobia in the fashion industry. She was very flamboyant about her sex life. She was never married and never had children. She was the first supermodel to die of aids.
Cindy Ann Crawford also came in to the industry straight out of high school. She was dubbed "Baby Gia" because of her striking resemblance to Gia Carangi but Cindy was seen in a different light. Cindy is the image of a picture perfect model.
