Unitarian Universalism


Every four years a President is elected to represent their religion. They hold an assembly each year, where delegates vote on some resolutions to current social, economic, and/or, environmental concerns (Sias). This democratic process isn't intended to represent every church members opinion. .

             The Unitarian Universalism Service Committee (UUSC) was formed during World War II. Since its early work aiding victims of Nazi oppression, the UUSC has been helping people help themselves through service and advocacy programs around the world. They are involved in defending the rights of children, supporting the struggles of the oppressed, public policy, and disaster relief. The Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation, represents, organizes, and acts on the concerns and issues of importance to UU women across the continent. Another related organization is the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Larger Fellowship, which provides a ministry to geographically isolated religious liberals (UUWHS).
             UU's today most importantly share a goal of social action for a just world that carries on the roots of UU ancestors, who made an impact great or small. "Every person is a change-maker and a potential positive force in the world"(Wesley). There are many UU programs that are aggressively engaged in local and global social justice, environmental, and political issues. .
             For the majority of members, political/social issues dealt with and debated are from a liberal standpoint. Some views include; conservation acts, equal opportunity for all race, gender, and sexual orientation, alternatives to the death penalty, women's right to abortion, treating drug abuse for medical attention, not criminal behavior, etc.
             Today there are over 1,000 congregations in the United States and Canada. Each congregation is different, and is shaped by the people. Since about 85% of the members of the UU faith grew up with a different religion, many other religious rituals and ideas are brought into the faith.
