Robert E. Lee As Symbol

Lee Became the Symbol of the South .
Lee, through strategic brilliance and inspired leadership, turned the Confederate States of America from a defenseless military nation into a viable threat to the Union. Lee represented the South admirably with his innovations in maneuver and military defense, which allowed him to gain victory consistently against superior forces. His distinctive leadership earned Lee loyalty and affection from his soldiers and Southern compatriots. A great general and a great man, Robert E. Lee was an American hero as well as a fitting symbol of the South. .
Lee's devotion and loyalty to his native state of Virginia, which caused him to side with the Confederacy, made him a symbol of the South. A perfect example of this faithfulness occurred during the onset of the Civil War. On the eve of the war, President Lincoln along with Secretary Francis Blair offered Lee control of the Union Army. Even though he was opposed to secession and considered slavery "evil", he politely declined the offer. Lee believed the Southern states were protecting the very liberty, freedom, and legal principles for which George Washington had left the British Empire. Most people believed that Lee was fighting for a lost cause because he sided with the South even though he knew that his native region had a slim chance of winning the war. .
Lee's personality made him a Southern symbol. Lee's greatest asset was his demeanor as a calm man who rarely raised his voice or expressed anger. While this might appear to be a negative asset when it comes to leadership skills, it was quite the opposite. With his quiet approach, Lee generated loyalty and confidence among his soldiers, who held him in almost a godlike esteem. In the film "Gettysburg," Lee spoke of his adversaries with kindness and respect. His close friendships and great relationships with his soldiers can also be seen in the film.
Lee's facial features can also be seen as symbolic.
