War on Guns

Should you carry a gun? As a child I was brought up believing that guns are dangerous. My mother began telling me about her brother who had several guns given to him by his father. She said that her dad was real safety conscious, always telling the kids that these are not toys, that they are for real and get people in bad trouble or badly hurt. Her father started taking his son hunting but he was always telling him that carrying a gun does not guarantee that you will not be harmed.
One day father and son were walking back to the house after a long day of hunting, the father asked his son if he took the bullet out of the chamber of the gun. The boy told his dad, yes. As they got within 100 yards of the house, the boy tripped. As he was falling to the ground, he used the butt of the gun to keep from falling, when he did, the gun went off and killed him instantly.
This was not a case of a criminal action. It shows that accidents do happen and can be prevented by having the right precautions.
There are more bigger concerns over guns than teaching someone about safety of guns. For instance, citizens should be concerned with who we allow to have guns. A study was published in 1995, it showed that guns were used defensively about 2.5 million times a year and that in only 5% of the cases were defenders harmed after they brandished their gun. Before the concealed weapons law came about, you had everybody and anybody purchasing the guns without any questions being asked or their backgrounds being checked.
Now that there is a law, everybody who purchases a gun has to fill out a questionnaire. Their background is checked before they are allowed to take the gum home. This brought down the crime rate.
There are still gang members and criminals that find ways to get guns. One way is a gun shop who sells to a single purchaser. In gun lingo these are "straw buyers", shady middle men who do a brisk business reselling guns to convicted felons, minors and others with itchy trigger fingers but no legal right to own a gun.
