What Should Be Done With Young Offenders?

What should be done with young offenders?.
Many people feel that minors should be punished because of their actions. Others feel that they should receive rehabilitation. If convicted should minors receive probation or ARE be sentenced to jail time and if so how harsh should it be? I personally feel that it depends on the type of crime that they committed. The ultimate question is what should be done with young offenders?.
Many states have a youthful offender's act, which puts some restraint on the handling of youthful offenders. South Carolina's youthful offenders act states: in all maters, other then armed robbery, persons age eighteen to twenty-five will be sentenced to no more than half of the allowed sentence for adult offenders and must be housed in no more than a minimum security prison. With regards to armed robberyYOU NEED A COMMA HERE-INTRODUCTORY PHRASE the ages include eighteen to twenty-one. Some may think this law is not fair because it gives youths slack. In reality it does, but when should minors become responsible of their own actions. YOU NEED A QUESTION MARK HERE Many intelligent children know that if they stick their hand on a hot burner it will have the negative consequences of burning their hand before the age of five.
As a student majoring in criminal justice, this issue is compelling to me because it contains information that I find intriguing. I feel strongly about this issue. As a future law enforcement officer I feel that I need to be familiar with this issue. I feel all youths convicted of a delinquent act or a status offense should receive counseling whether they receive jail time or not to find out why youths commit crimes so that maybe we can deter others from crimes. Youths robbing, killing, and hurting others should be unheard of. Unfortunately it is not.
