Kipling Research Paper

Can animals be compared with humans on an intellectual and emotional scale? If they can't be, then why can animals be referred to as being sly, intelligent, or even man's best friend? Throughout history, men have portrayed animals such as the snake in the book of Genesis or Lassie the dog as possessing human characteristics and intelligence. Rudyard Kipling is also a person who has portrayed animals in an intelligent light. In Kipling's works the animals show that they can be just as intelligent as humans through the animals reasoning behind their actions, the codes of conduct or morality that the animals live by, and through the way man shows animals intelligence by equivocating himself to them. .
The first example of animals being just as intelligent as humans is throught the reasoning animals use before they act. The first example of this is when a mongoose named Rikki Tikki Tavi manages to kill a snake named Kanait and starts to eat him but does not finish eating the snake because Rikki remembers that " [ ] a full meal makes a slow mongoose, and if he wanted all his strength and quickness ready, [Rikki] must keep himself thin", thus showing that Ricki can think logically enough that he can stop himself from becoming fat. Another example is of a dog named Teem who learns from his aunt that it is bad to bit sheep if he is a sheep dog because if he were to do so he would be "[ ] confess[ing] failure" to being a sheepdog. Finally, Shere Khan the tiger did not attack Mowgli in Kipling's "Mowgli's Borthers" because Khan knew that the wolf was protecting Mowgli "[ ] had all the advantage of the ground [ ]" and would beat Khan if he were to start fighting in the wolf's den. All of these examples showed that by using their intelligence to plan ahead or overcome obstacles, animals can be put on the same intellectual scale as Man. .
The second example of animals showing that they can be just as intelligent as Man is through the intelligence shown by animals that live by codes of conduct or morality.
