Wide Area Networks & Standards

Since dial-up modems are relatively slow by today's standards, they are seen as a poor mans broadband. Home users primarily use them now since companies use cable systems for the extra bandwidth. The home user would typically us their connection for e-mail, web searching or maybe for shopping and home banking, none of which require a lot of bandwidth.
             1b) Cable Modem.
Broadband is the common term for a high bandwidth Internet connection. A Broadband service can be capable of transmitting data at up to 40 times the speed of a standard modem. Equally importantly, it is always on - you don't need to dial up every time you want to log on. Just sit down at your computer and the Internet is there - like electricity or tap water! .
If you use a standard modem, you may find yourself waiting several minutes if sending emails with large file attachments, web pages with lots of pictures, complex graphics or animations. You may also find it difficult to view video on the web, or listen to music or sound. With the bandwidth that comes with cable, people can download huge files, play online games or run live online conferences between many users. One of the big uses of broadband is the ability to download huge files very quickly.
This ability to download/upload huge files makes this system ideal for business purposes. Companies like IBM & COMPAQ have large databases and have thousands of users connecting to their servers each day. It is vital for these companies to keep their customers happy, with patches, fixes or printable instructions ect, so large bandwidth is required to cope with all the demands of the everyday customer connecting to their servers. The huge bandwidth that cable offers is the only way a forward thinking company could realistically communicate and compete in today's fast moving market.
Probably the most famous of all the companies is Microsoft. They have millions of customers from all over the world and their servers would crash if they did not have huge bandwidth.
