Work Place Stress

It seems as though in everyday life we encounter stress. The stresses that are encountered daily are most likely the result of our jobs. According to the article Employer-sponsored Programs Try to Keep Workplace Stress in Check, by J. Krivyanski, "A study by Northwestern National Life found one-fourth of all employees view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives." With employee views like these, employers are attempting to create better work environments. In the same article by Krivyanski, he states "Nearly one half of large companies in the United States have started to provide some type of stress management programs for their work forces." Obviously, the need is there. With recent advances in technology stress levels have increased. This is said to be due to being able to instantly reach someone. Most of us carry cell phones or pagers. Krivyanski also states, "If a company chooses not to deal with the problem of workplace stress, the effects can be costly and present a real health risk. This increase in stress has also lead to increases in unethical behavior. This can also hurt a business in other ways. .
             Technology and Stress.
Improvements in technology occur every hour. If one can remember the first cell phones in a bag and then compare them to the ones that we have today with the internet and now cameras, you can see how technology has improved. While these strides in technology has helped millions, it is also hurting millions. By being always available, we are increasing our stress levels. In the article Caught in the Web: Combating Work Stress in the Information Age, by B. Statland, "The computer, the fax, the cell phone, the pager - all the trappings of the information age - cause stress in the work place." Again, these advances make us available all of the time, before these came about the only way to communicate was by phone or letter. We have also lost what urgency means.
