The Maroons

.
             Maroon leaders.
One of the most remarkable and well-known Maroon leaders was a woman known as Nanny. Nanny possessed the courage and fighting skills of a man.
She was born of the Ashanti tribe, and possessed the skills and qualities of a fierce slick and cunning military leader. Nanny was the person who had originally introduced the guerilla system to the other Maroons. This made them able to trick the white's troops.
Nanny could be described as "a fearless warrior who used militarist techniques to fool and beguile the English". Nanny was important to the Maroons in that she helped them to fight the British, she instilled in them courage, confidence and pride and helped them to maintain their spirit of freedom and independence. .
Another Maroon leader who helped the Maroons to successfully fight the British was Cudjoe. Was described as a short dwarf like man. Despite his small size Cudjoe was able to portray fighting skills that were effective against the whites. Cudjoe in fact finished off what Nanny had started. He was the person in charge of the Trelawny Town Maroons, and was the first of all the Maroon leaders to sign the peace treaty of 1739. Even though the Maroons of other towns were not pleased with what he did, he eventually made them see that the only hope they had for the future would be to make peace with the enemy. Cudjoe was determined to keep the Maroons free and independent and he made every effort to do this. Some other Maroon leaders were Cudjoe's brother Accompong, Cuffee a fiery spirit man as well as Quao and Johnny. .
             Trade system.
The Maroons like any other group needed to develop a trade system in order for them to be provided with all the food and weapons necessary for them to keep on going. They had an extensive trade system and even managed to trade with other Maroons in Cuba and hispanola. Internally the Maroons traded with other Maroons in the Rio Grande Valley and the Blue Mountains.
