Anytime work needs to be need, there is always a pressing nature to it that causes stress in the person who has to carry it out. Speaking from personal experience, there is nothing worse than a large project that needs to be done and having no one to help. The workload is so heavy and stressful and it is all on one person to complete. In a group, this stress is eliminated, as the workload can be divided up amongst more than one person. This allows the job to be completed quicker, and with less stress. .
A counter-argument may be that a group just makes the work easier, as everyone will have to do less work. Yes, this is true, and that is the idea. The work itself becomes easier, but the concept is the same. Everyone in the group will still have to understand the concept of what they are doing. They will still gain a basic knowledge of the work being done and learn what is supposed to be learned. The menial tasks will be easier, but they will take as much away from the task as they would have by themselves.
There is another problem with individual work, and it is a psychological problem. Picture this scenario: You just finished work that you were assigned to do individually. Your work must be presented to your instructor or classmates. During your presentation, you begin to get nervous knowing that you are responsible for every detail of what you"re presenting. Do you feel worried that if you slip up even a second, everyone will notice your mistake? Everyone will know you were the one that screwed up. Haven't you had that feeling of being unsure of your own work? Students are naturally worried about sharing their work with their peers because they fear any mistakes they have made. If a teacher asks a student to read a piece of work, how many volunteers do they get, three? Maybe four? Group work is a more non-personal way of presenting ideas or doing a project.
