BCS

These rankings are an outrage because computers cannot visually witness a team's performance. This limits its accuracy in ranking teams. A prime example of this has come up as recently as the week of December 2, 2002. Southern California, with a record of 10-2, is ranked number one in the poll released by the New York Times. Meanwhile, the second and third ranked teams in this poll, Miami and Ohio State, are undefeated and unanimously ranked one and two in every major computer and human poll.
The formulas used by these computer polls are also constantly being changed at the request of the BCS. As they continue to be modified, each ranking becomes more alike. The computer polls used to use many different aspects to determine their rankings. Some of the things considered were record, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. For the 2002 season, the BCS ordered that the computer polls drop margin of victory from their criteria. Now the only things remaining in the computer polls are already considered in the BCS formula. In the human polls, the voters can vote based on how a team performs, including margin of victory. The computer polls now see a 21-20 victory and a 65-0 victory exactly the same. Most schools make their schedules five or more years ahead of time. They have no control over the quality of their opponents when they finally play the game. The only way they can improve their standing is to beat the other team badly. That is now eliminated as an option. .
The teams that are selected for BCS bowls other than the national championship are determined entirely separate from the BCS rankings. The BCS is based on the six major conferences in college football as well as the independent school Notre Dame. The six major conferences in college football are the Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern, Big East, Pacific-10, and Atlantic Coast Conferences ("About the BCS-). Conference USA, Sun Belt, Mid American, Western Athletic, and Mountain West Conferences, as well as five independent schools are left out of the system.
