The Relationship of Mothers and Daughters in Divine Secrets

The Times writes an article entitled Tap-dancing child abuser which tells about the horrible way in which Vivi (Sidda's mother) treated her children. Vivi is outraged that her daughter would exploit her this way. She knew that her children were never treated as horribly as this article said. She vows never to speak to her daughter again despite the phone calls she constantly receives from Sidda trying to explain and apologize. Sidda cannot take this loss of her mother from her life and decides to go on a retreat. While she is there she unexpectedly receives a package from Vivi containing a scrapbook which holds the secrets to her mothers childhood and life with her three best friends who called themselves "the Ya-yas-.(mostlyfiction.com) The rest of the novel after this point reveals just what is in that scrapbook and what it all means to Sidda. The scrapbook symbolizes the reuniting of a mother and daughter. Although both will .

             still feel pain and sorrow over what happened, they are able to overcome it. It is things like this, which make the mother-daughter relationship such a special one and one which people will always remain in awe over.
             The similarities between Wells and Sidda are unmistakable. Both are gifted writers whose gift stemmed from childhood. Each grew up in Louisiana as Southern girls and then moved to a busier northern area. Both always have been and always will be Southern girl at heart.(Bookpage.com) There are many similarities that the reader can plainly see, but there are also many that leave the reader guessing. .
             Sidda's childhood experiences were uncovered in the novel. Her mother was not the perfect mother she appeared to be and that is hard for not only Vivi, but for Sidda as well. There comes a day in every daughter's life where she realizes that her mother is not perfect. As silly as it may seem, this is a very hard thing to admit.
