He concludes that therefore literature is no longer useful in our society because it is a sham, and that means it is crap. As most readers see, Morgan's charges are unfounded and pointless. Easily disproved, literature is not crap because as stated above, it brings information, entertainment, ideas and opinions to millions of people without access to television and/or film. Added to this, without literature, there would be nothing for TV and film's to begin from. Even though I felt that Breaktime was difficult to read, and somewhat confusing at times, it does fit in with my personal description of literature. It provided entertainment through Ditto's escapades, it gave us new opinions through Morgan's "Charges Against Literature", and many girls learnt about the world of a teenage boy, again through Ditto's escapades. .
Breaktime dealt with many issues; family relations, between Ditto and his parents, and Helen and her parents, appearance versus reality, whether the story actually happened or whether it was Ditto's imagination, and the appearance of Helen versus the reality of her feelings, and finally loss of innocence, shown throughout the book and culminated through Ditto's loss of his virginity, and his growing closer to his father. .
Morgan's argument, as stated before, is simply that literature is out dated and therefore it is crap. He states that because we are able to gain the same information from film and television that literature, i.e. books, is now effluent, a waste of time. The challenge is responded to in many ways by Ditto. He uses three main issues that we face in everyday life, loss of innocence, family relations, and appearance versus reality, to answer the charges. The first and foremost issue explored in the book was loss of innocence. There are several ways that Ditto uses this. Firstly in his camping expedition when he goes to meet Helen and secondly when he and his father reconcile through his father's letter and his passing on of his medals.
