Poems are words expressing what is inside us. It is also well known that the environment around us affects the way we view things, and it is the factor that pushes us to act and rebel in a certain way. .
In my research about this topic I came upon many names and characters that were shaped environment. Two of these are Maya Angelou and Tupac Shakur. Maya Angelou conquer the notion of rebellion from three specific and popular subject positions: that of a woman, a black, and a black woman.
She is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She has been published ten best selling books and numerous magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations. At the request of President Clinton, she wrote and delivered a poem at his 1993 presidential inauguration. Maya was born in St. Louis and raised in a segregated rural Arkansas. .
Her poetry is full of experience her childhood and adolescence years back in Arkansas. The style that she opted for is a rebellion style defending her race from the criticism that she is exposed to. .
"Still I rise" is one of her most famous poems. In it she describes the basic feelings and descriptions of the women that don't need any hatred to try to lift them up. Basically, she shows that women in general, as well, as her, are strong. .
In the poem, she writes about all the thoughts that people have against her, and how she won't let them put her down. She also describes from her prospective as a black woman how she has risen through all that she and her ancestors has gone through. They were put down by being forced to be slaves. .
She always carries herself as a strong black woman. Her ancestors dreams was always to have someone brave and educated to sacrifice his or her time and maybe life to protect them. Maya Angeloo in my openion was that person that they dreamed of. She writes: .
