Our Town

Our Town, by Thornton Wilder is a play that takes place in a small fictional town of Grover's Corner, New Hampshire. The play takes the audience through the cycles of life, with the purpose of getting a universal message stating that life shouldn't be taken for granted. Emily Webb, one of the most important characters in the play, is Wilder's character in which he uses to show the audience a universal message that anyone would understand and relate to. Another character that helps relate to the play is the stage manager.
Not so often a stage manager actually interacts with the audience. The role of the stage manager is brilliant. The stage manager is really more like a story teller more than a director she controls everything in the play. The stage manager is a brilliant character He/She helps the audience interact with the play since the plot of the play is not in a sequenced order. The stage manager explains the events and informs the audience the time and day. She/He explains where and what should the setting look like. The stage manager also gives the audience a feeling that she is not part of the play that she/he is not acting that the whole thing is not really planed. She/he does this by asking the audience questions and then the play has actors come and act like they are part of the audience. They stand from the crowd and ask some rehears questions. This role of the stage manager is very brilliant it gives a whole new flavor to plays.
The character Emily plays a crucial scene in the play, the part where Emily went back to her twelfth birthday. At first, Emily wanted to go back and relive the happiest day of her life, but Mrs. Gibbs stopped her and told her to visit a normal day instead. Mrs. Gibbs knew what would happen to Emily if she had relived a joyful day in her life. If Emily had went back to a special occasion, she would've been overwhelmed by the all the beauty that she didn't pay attention to.
