Teens at Work

I am writing my report on teens at work. In my paper I will give you statistics and opinions from professionals and myself. This is a good subject for me because I have been working at the same job for almost three years. I am a cook at O"Hara's pub and grill in Brunswick. I usually work about twenty-five hours a week. One fifth of sophomores work twenty hours for their employers. Working as a teen has some very important subjects that can be used in future jobs. Some kids even support their families by going to work everyday to help put food on the table (Mauk 2). I know a kid at school who works to help his single mother pay bills and support herself. Teens also use their job as a source of money to do things they want to, such as buy a nice car or new clothes (Mauk 1). The main thing about working as a teen is that it teaches responsibility (mauk 2) and gives kids a sense of independence. But as always, there is a bad side to working to, which is purchasing or using drugs, alcohol, and less material things such as greed. Working can also mean falling grades because of working to late. Kids who work are ten times more likely to fall asleep in class than a kid who doesn't work. Fifty eight percent of seniors admit that their jobs interfere with their school responsibilities (etzoni 1). Although I enjoy working I admit that it provides easy access to drugs and alcohol (mauk 3). The professionals who sit and look at statistics and talk to children all day long are split right down the center on this subject. Some professionals believe that working is good for kids. Most kids who work set long- term goals (beck 2) and set their priorities straight by thinking about school before work (beck 1). Others say that kids should not work until they are out of school. Off campus employers will probably be less likely to switch around schedule to fit in schooling (beck 1). I personally feel that working at a young age is good for you.
