An Almost Deadly Vacation

The scars are still there and some of my skin is still discolored from the deep bruises. The scars fade a little each year but I"m not sure they will ever fully disappear. When I look in the mirror, I am constantly reminded of my wonderful week at the beach that turned very wrong. In the Summer of 2001 I had an experience that I will never forget. I came face to face with one of mother nature's most dangerous storms, a tornado. .
On Saturday, July 25th, 2001, I took a week long a vacation to visit my best friend, Jessica, that had moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in eighth grade. I had just gotten my license in June so my parents did not want me to drive five hours away from home. So, my parents decided to meet Jessica and her parents half way, in Rockingham. After a short lunch at Wendy's in Rockingham I joined Jessica's family in their family van, and my vacation started from the moment I got in the car. .
Jessica and I spent the first night of my seven-night stay just catching up on everything that we had missed, like the latest boyfriends or the drama that was happening between our friends back in Mount Airy. After gossiping for hours we watched several funny movies so we could laugh even more. After hours of laughter, we finally fell asleep while watching old home videos from when we were kids. On Sunday, we went to the beach at about 11:00, but our day was cut short at 3:00 because of an afternoon storm. Every day after that was pretty much the same story. The rain poured down at a constant rate for the next four days. There were standing puddles of water, at least four inches deep, everywhere we went. Finally, after a miserable week of rain, Friday looked like it was going to be beautiful day. .
Filled with excitement, Jessica and I decided to go to the beach very early so we could actually get some sun before I had to leave on Saturday. We got up at about 8:00 Friday morning and we were on the beach by 9:00.
