The chapter about race was a really interesting topic in The Closing of the American Mind. While students in general are consistent, there's a pretty big hole between the black people and the white people. Bloom said, "White and black students do not in general become real friends with one another." I somewhat agree with this statement. Some black and white students are friends to show that the whole white on black hate back in the day has diminished. White students associate with blacks because it is no longer right to show hate or racism towards blacks. Since we are in a country that speaks highly of freedom and that everyone is equal under the eyes of god, white students and black students you can say are just being friends because that is what our society has taught us. .
Race is a troubling topic. Even though black people and white people are equal under the United States they are both really different. Even though the whole slavery and racism issues are out the windows you still get a sense that white people and black people stay there own separate ways.I feel that students that get into college because of affirmative action, are losing out because they are not really prepared. The work ethic they perform is worse, and they are more highly likely to fail the course because they really are not suppose to be in that instituite of learning or even that class. Professors may feel like they have to pass them because they got in though affirmative action, and they might get a grade they do not deserve.
Another important quote that Allan Bloom said about race is, "Affirmative action now institutionalises the worse aspects of separatism. The fact is that the average black students's achievements do not equal those of the average white student in good universities and everybody knows it." It makes me feel sort of racist when I again agree on Bloom with this statement. However, some white students despise those black students or any other minority student who is allowed in the school because of affirmative action.
