With all the rules of the road, fifteen questions do not seem like an adequate amount to prove one's knowledge. .
Once a permit is obtained, there is a mandatory six month waiting period and sixty-hour practice time before one can take the driving test. At age eighteen, the waiting period is only three days. Sixty hours is equivalent to approximately three days. It is easy to find three days out of the six months to practice during the day with the sun shining and the roads dry. Practicing on days like these limits the driver's experience to any other road conditions. The driving test consist of three major parts; parking, light checks, and driving a course. Though the parking and light checks section on the test seem to make sense, a good majority of the driving courses require* only a quick drive around the block in a back neighborhood. This does not seem hard enough to challenge one's driving ability. Any moron* that has two hours of driving practice around his neighborhood could pass this course.
Are teens mature enough to handle this responsibility? Those who feel that sixteen and a half is too young would argue that teens are immature, obsessed with other things surrounding them, easily prone to daydreaming, and overly emotional. These factors take away the concentration from the road. The people that feel that sixteen and a half is a reasonable age would state that it's hard to define maturity and therefore, it is impossible to pin an age to the term. .
Edgar Synder and associates, creators of the website "Tips on Parenting the Teenage Driver", states, "Many factors contribute to the fatal accidents caused by teens; such as inexperience, lack of judgement, insufficient instructing, teen passengers that encourage reckless driving patterns, substance abuse, road aggression, and automotive advertisements that emphasize speed and power." Edgar Synder and associates seem to uphold this argument for the sake of those who feel that teens that are sixteen and a half are not mature enough to the handle the responsibility of driving.
