John Proctor of the Crucible

            Throughout Arthur Miller's The Crucible John Proctor evolved from a good person with a few flaws to an even better person. He didn't have much power over anything except for his wife and Abigail, who he had an affair with. In that time it was normal for men to have power over women, especially their wives. In a way since Proctor had power that every man had it wasn't really power. Most of all which is very important he has power over important situations in his and his wife's life. I believe John Proctor became a better person and had some power throughout the play.
             At first I didn't believe that Proctor loved his wife. He cheated on her with Abigail. You don't do that to someone you love. Elizabeth wasn't stupid though, she knew that he had an affair with Abigail. She would show suspicion sometimes and that is when Proctor's power over his wife would come out." Woman. I"ll not have your suspicion any more."(p.54) See how he addresses her as women and not her name, that's showing that he has some power of her. It's like saying she is a women so she has no right to be called by her name when her husband is mad. That shows some kind of power. If it was the wife mad I"m sure she wouldn't call him man. If it was me that was called women I would think it was very disrespectful.
             When Elizabeth was accused of witchcraft Proctor didn't have much power when Cheever came with the warrant for her arrest. Procter couldn't protect her from going to jail and being hung if guilty. He had no power to get her out of this. He showed that he wanted to protect her and that he really did love her. He would do anything to save her."I will fall like the ocean on that court! Fear nothing, Elizabeth."(p. 78) Now when he has no power over a situation he became a more loving person. He shows that he cares for her. It seems when he has no power he becomes a better person.
             In Act 3 Procter took control of what was going on. He still wanted to do anything in his power that he could do to save his innocent wife.
